Continuity: the unbroken and consistent existence or operation of something over a period of time. Synonyms: continuousness, uninterruptedness, flow, progression.
This has been sitting in the back of my thoughts lately. Continuity. I feel we do well when we have a sense of continuity in our lives, the regular flow of life’s stories that pulse and magnify the important experiences along our journey. Family. Friends. Moments and memories. It’s a gift really, one most take for granted when it’s just normal day to day living.
Until it isn’t.
What I find is when we have a disruption in our flow, the continuity, our sense of comfort, confidence, knowing what’s expected and how to do, express, experience, changes, our coping skills activated. We seek a new sense of normal, or hope the bridge between the old and new, the continuity and disruption, is short and fast.
This includes everything from job changes, emotional break-ups, divorce, health crises. Death. Truth is for 99% of us, we all get to experience this rock and roll, roller coaster adventure. It’s what I see when I watch and observe people on the streets, at the grocery store, airports, everywhere. The definition is not even in their dictionaries. Flow. But it’s what we desire, really, deep down. Why we seek simplicity in a chaotic world. Continuity. Even when we choose to be gypsies or hermits or entrepreneurs or whatever, we still desire progression, cohesion, stability. Vitality.
It’s adjusting. Acclimating to a new sense of normal, harmonizing the molecules, habituating wholeness even in the splinters, that creates a new moment to moment standard. This is how we start the flow, the creation of new normal, continuity. From imagining new industrial boots that carry us over vast chasms, to wearing James Dean sunglasses that give us verve and pop, to our super- power invisibility cloak we can pull out at any given moment to whisk us away to our special place. It’s creating literally a new sense of who we are, actually, at any given moment, so our sense of flow just Is. No matter what, no matter when, no matter how. All we have to do is change our minds and imagine what we need. Then believe it.
Now that’s magic; and it’s all about how we use our wands. I know from experience, it’s what’s gotten me through multiple unpleasant events – my reinvention of myself – seeing through my James Dean’s, maneuvering through the boulders and avoiding the pit dragons, keeping my eye on the goal and my flow. Never giving up or in. It’s not always easy. I have to work on it. Daily really. I personally love continuity and flow. And I’m stronger now in this new extensive, experience-abundant river, utilizing my new “adjusting” tools, my bag like Mary Poppins, full, with a continuous flow of goodies to assist my journey, dancing in this current continuity that is my life.
Here’s to our bag of tricks!
Cosmic sunshine to you.
