‘Demanding Healthy Food: Is the Population Ready?’

Anyone who knows me is aware of the soapbox I can happily stand upon – and it can be on a myriad of topics too. As many have stated, I am fairly opinionated.  Okay, now with the truth revealed, my favorite soapbox and even more importantly my passion is health! Health is all its guises, vitality from within.

My biggest rampage, my personal soapbox, is about the foods we put into our bodies, the fuel that serves our cells to keep us moving daily. Our foods today are loaded, no saturated, with so many ingredients that don’t nourish our bodies, enliven our systems or keep us healthy. All we have to do is watch people – anywhere- to see the amount of obese individuals, now over one-third of the adult population in the states, to see literally things need to change! This doesn’t take into account obese children, as well as those individuals who carry an extra ten to twenty, maybe thirty  pounds of fat luggage, who now think this is normal. Percentage wise, I feel there are more people with weight issues than those who have healthy body-fat ratios. Add to the obesity  rates, the 70%  who are unhealthy or worse, sick and/or dying. And we wonder why our health care costs are staggeringly outrageous?  Hmmm, let me think.

To put it into context, next time you pull in to a gas station, buy galleons of pop and put it into your gas tank. See how far it goes, how well it will drive. Yet this is what we do on  a regular basis to our bodies: pop, ice cream, french fries, nachos, hamburgers, cheesy pizza, donuts, cookies, white bread with preservatives, calorie laden morsels of fat, chemicals and sugars. And I didn’t even mention all the pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides saturating our fruits and vegetables. OMG!!

Asking people to change is at the core of the challenge. Most individuals are not ready to give up their caramel chocolate latte frappuccino with 600 plus calories, or their morning pork patties filled with nitrates, preservatives and high doses of sodium or that fabulous chocolate decadent cake. Walking away from Friday night pizzas and beers? Not likely to happen. And yet this is at the core of what is wrong with our health. Our choices. If we as consumers were to demand healthy foods, were to boycott manufacturers asking for organic healthy ingredients, resisting Cheetos, fish and chips,  burritos, bear-claws, etc, we actually might get the farmers and food companies to change what it is they produce. And with that our health would improve.

We as consumers aren’t ready for this shift.

This is my dream, my passion – changing our body’s fuel – the reason for my soapbox. Come join me, there is plenty of room.

I’m with you! This is such an important mission, but I think you’re right that most people aren’t necessarily ready for it. But this has to do with education and information! We need to spread the word and keep spreading it no matter what.
