“Avoid the Time-Sucks: Nine Tips on How to Get More Day Out of Your Time”

Back in the seventies Ram Dass wrote a book called “Be Here Now.” I still have my original copy.  In 1997, Eckhard Tolle wrote, “The Power of Now” a book of spiritual enlightenment showcasing the steps on achieving this goal.  Twenty years after Tolle wrote this best seller, there’s more depression, more anxiety, more vitriolic craziness. People are quick to judge, throw horrific verbal barbs, became physically abusive, spin-out on the serial dating game never dialing it down into intimacy. Watch the news, ask your single friends. Yet, I feel if these words of wisdom were utilized daily, our world would begin to change. We need to be “present.” Right here, right now, with whatever we are doing…and…

…Become more Intimate with ourselves, with each other, with life. Embrace “what is” while we create the extras we desire. It all starts right now, this second. Period.

We deal with negative time-sucks everyday- demands beyond our control. A sick child, a demanding employer, a frustrated partner, thick heavy traffic. The list is endless.  We add in personal time-sucks, on-line dating, social media to insipid TV shows full of dribble and buffoonery and there goes the day. This is Time that isn’t replaceable. In a throw-away society where it’s easy to replace something rather than fix and repair, we tend to throw-away our time in the same way. A year later we are still in the same place, doing the same things, how many vital days evaporated into the mists?

Even though we have all heard the adage of “the real gift is the present,” few actually live this. Here are a few reminders, tips to refresh our memories:

1. No matter what, no matter where, bring your mind, your thinking, to what is literally right before you. Surroundings. Remember to actually “Be Here Now.”

2. We have 1440 minutes in a day. If it were $1440 how would we spend it? Wisely? This is our time vault. If we spent it differently, more prudently, imagine how rich we’d be in a year- able to speak a foreign language, a better singer, chef, biker, parent, lover. Anything. Everything. Richer. Become the person you’d fall in love with.

3. Pay attention -Literally- to where the day goes? Make a log. Then take charge of changing the structure to gain space and time for what you desire.

4.  Stay tuned to every element of beauty that passes before our eyes. Being aware of the grace and color of the world keeps us right here, right now, in gratitude.

5. Strive for more daily intimacy with yourself; get to know the why’s of your habits and behavior to improve the short comings, and love the rich inside filling.

6. Extend that relationship intimacy into nature. Get quiet. Hug a tree. Feel the presence/present(s) and timeliness that comes from that union.

7. Reach out, connect with people. Be willing to care, get involved. Ask Questions. Yes, guys, that means you too!! Stay present.

8. Actively listen. Repeat back, paraphrase what the other says. Keeps you in the Now.

9. Expand your virtual horizons. Feel the world immediately around you, then expand to your town, state, country, earth. Feel the presence of the planet. Now.

W..here…than here.

I had a four hour drive over Mt Hood to the Columbia River to Swift Reservoir on Mt St Helens.  I embraced the miles and savored every yellow, red, orange and soft green leaf I saw along the highway. I stepped into the moment, taking advantage of what was, making the trip enjoyable; I relished the journey. There was No Time.

No Other Where than here.

Cosmic sunshine to you.
